Your Disposition - Our Friends & Family Experience
Our Catalonia adventure is focused on becoming part of a local family with other guests. Everything we do revolves around that. People seeking a traditional luxury point-to-point tour might reconsider. Our groups span all ages, men & women, singles & couples... everyone is welcome. When our guests come ready to embrace Catalan culture, look forward to trying new things, and interact with both locals and fellow guests as family, it is always amazing.
Even the way our guests see us is important. If you see us as "tour leaders providing a service," you may want to reconsider our trips. We bring you into our family and become part of the group with you... as though you are visiting friends and family who happen to live in Catalonia. Our driver, the winemakers, Manye and Marta's family, the people teaching you to cook or build human towers are part of our friends and family - they eat with you, harvest with you, and celebrate with you.
If you are able to be in this frame of mind, our itinerary will be like nothing you have ever experienced. But if you are looking for a more detached, formal relationship, our trips may not be for you.

Be Ready to Embrace Catalan Culture Completely
Our Catalonia adventure focuses on bringing you into the true culture of this distinctive region. Some guests prefer to observe it rather than live it. We embrace the culture and do things the way Catalans do, which may or may not be what you are looking for. This includes eating when families eat (dinner starts at 9-10 PM and can last for hours). You'll participate in social gatherings that continue until late evening, experiencing the Catalan tradition of long, leisurely meals. You'll embrace traditional Catalan cuisine featuring seafood, jamón, cured meats, and dishes cooked in ways that may differ from North American preferences.
You'll experience warm Mediterranean hospitality where personal space is smaller and physical contact (cheek kisses, embraces) is the norm. You'll join passionate discussions about castells, wine, local traditions, and Catalan culture. Every step of the way we adapt to the local culture, rather than asking the local culture to adapt to us. This makes us much more welcome guests and gives you access to experiences that simply don't exist for regular tourists. But if you prefer familiar schedules, personal space boundaries, and North American-style service, this immersive approach may not be for you.

EXPECT and EMBRACE Changes in the Schedule
Unpredictable changes can always happen. Some activities depend on favorable weather conditions, and we may need to adjust timings or move celebrations indoors. Weather can be unpredictable, and some things on our itinerary simply cannot be done in certain weather conditions. For example, our grape harvest and vineyard activities are full outdoor experiences - in case of rain they will have to be substituted by another activity indoors. Unfortunately, we cannot control what we cannot control, but please know that we do everything in our power to make everything happen.
There are, however, some things that we may change from time to time that ARE within our control. For example, there may be a special festival event happening in town. Or we may have a unique opportunity to participate in local activities, such as a calçotada celebration, traditional festival, or spontaneous family gathering. These are often the kinds of things that come up on the fly with a phone call. They are rare, but they do happen. These are the times that we make a call based on our experience, because if we look for a unanimous vote among the guests on something they cannot imagine until they have experienced, we will never get a consensus.
Our reasoning is simple: Our name is "Culture Discovery Vacations", and we are all about unique experiences that you would never be able to otherwise have. You can visit that monastery on the itinerary again, but when will you have the chance to join that spontaneous village celebration?

Physical Requirements - Important for Your Safety and Enjoyment
You by no means need to be athletic for this adventure, but you must be comfortable with certain physical activities that are essential to the experience:
Walking on Various Surfaces - Tarragona and Barcelona feature cobblestone streets, medieval alleyways, and varied surfaces. Historic centers like Santes Creus and Priorat have uneven cobblestones. You should be able to walk comfortably for up to 45 minutes on varied terrain.
Hiking & Trail Activities - Our countryside excursions include a 1-hour riverside hike on relatively flat terrain through forests and along the Gaià River. The path involves crossing wooden bridges and walking on natural trails. Proper footwear and steady footing are essential.
Vineyard Work - You'll be harvesting grapes in Manye's vineyards, which involves bending, carrying small baskets of grapes, and walking on uneven vineyard ground for approximately 1 hour. Grape stomping requires standing barefoot in a vat. While chairs are available for those who prefer to observe, this is a signature experience of the trip.
Stairs & Uphill Walking - Tarragona's historic center is in the "higher part" of town and requires uphill walking. Some areas of Barcelona, Santes Creus, and Priorat also have stairs and uphill sections. The Sanctuary of Montserrat in Montferri is perched on a hillside.
Weather & Comfort - October in Catalonia is typically mild and pleasant (60-75°F / 15-24°C), but you must be comfortable with extended outdoor activities including vineyard work, hiking, and e-bike riding. Days can be warm and sunny or occasionally rainy.
Extended Vehicle Travel - Our itinerary includes drives of up to 2.5 hours between destinations, some on scenic curvy mountain roads (especially to Priorat). You should be comfortable with longer periods in vehicles.
Train Travel - We'll take comfortable trains between Tarragona and Barcelona (approximately 1-1.5 hours each way). Train stations require walking with luggage and navigating platforms.
E-Bike Riding Ability - Our Delta de l'Ebre excursion includes a 1-hour e-bike ride on very flat terrain through rice fields. This is beginner-friendly, but you must be comfortable riding a bicycle and able to balance and pedal for this duration.
Boat Travel - A short 15-20 minute boat ride to the oyster farms in Delta de l'Ebre is included. You must be comfortable boarding a small boat.
General Mobility Guideline - A good rule would be to ask yourself if you can: walk 2 miles on varied terrain (including cobblestones and light hills), ride a bicycle for 1 hour, stand for cooking classes and cultural activities, and participate in outdoor activities for 4-6 hours with rest breaks.

Age Considerations
We have had guests as old as 90 years old with no problems whatsoever. Age is not a limiting factor, so long as you are in good physical condition with no health problems that moderate outdoor activities or exertion would complicate. The key is your fitness level and comfort with walking, outdoor activities, and cultural immersion—not your age.
-
The Ultra-Small Group Environment
With only 15 guests maximum, you'll get to know everyone quite well over the 8 days. This creates incredible friendships but means there's no anonymity. If you prefer to keep to yourself or need significant personal space, the intimate nature of our tour may not be comfortable for you. You'll be part of a close-knit group experiencing Catalan family life together.

Bus & Train Time
Catalonia is a compact but diverse region. To experience everything from coastal Tarragona to mountain vineyards in Priorat, from Barcelona to the wetlands of Delta de l'Ebre, we'll have a mix of travel days. The longest drives will be about 2.5 hours (to Priorat, which features scenic but curvy mountain roads), and we will include stops to make it easier to handle. We'll also take comfortable trains between Tarragona and Barcelona. This is a fairly active trip that involves moving around Catalonia with periods of bus and train travel to reach authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences.

How This Trip is Unique From Traditional Tours
Service Style: This is family immersion, not luxury service. Josep Mañé and his family become your friends, not your service providers. You'll harvest grapes alongside them, stomp Mistela in their cellar, eat lunch at their family table, and celebrate as equals in their 250-year-old village.
Local Integration Reality: Our Catalan friends don't just guide you - they eat at your table, teach you to build human towers, share family wine-making traditions spanning 8 generations, and include you in genuine local celebrations. Marta serves you her famous entrepans at Bar del Mig. Bet welcomes you into her kitchen. The castells team in Valls lets you practice building human pyramids with them. They become your travel companions and family, not your tour guides.
Cultural Immersion: Extremely immersive. You'll be welcomed into family homes, participate in authentic grape harvests, learn traditional cooking from local chefs, plant oysters in the Delta, and experience culture as an insider, not a tourist. You'll eat dinner at 9-10 PM, embrace the Catalan tradition of long leisurely meals with multiple courses and wine, and experience the rhythm of Mediterranean life.
Group Dynamic: With only 15 people maximum, every guest affects the group energy. We need people who enhance the family atmosphere, not those who remain aloof or demanding. You'll work together harvesting grapes, build human towers as a team, and celebrate as one extended family.
Flexibility Required: Weather, local circumstances, and unexpected cultural opportunities (like spontaneous festivals or calçotada invitations) may require schedule changes. Guests who stress about changes or need rigid schedules should reconsider.
Special Considerations We Can (and Cannot) Accommodate
| Physical Limitations |
You must be able to walk up to 2 miles per day on varied terrain (cobblestones, vineyard paths, light hiking trails) and handle at least a few flights of stairs. Many of Catalonia's most beautiful sites—historic centers, monasteries, vineyards, medieval towns—require walking on uneven surfaces and navigating stairs.
If you need physical assistance, please bring someone who can help you, as we cannot compromise other guests' experiences.
Vineyard activities require ability to bend, carry light baskets, and walk on uneven ground. Grape stomping requires standing balance. E-bike riding requires basic bicycle skills. |
| Dietary Requirements | We can accommodate most food allergies, vegetarian diets, and pescatarian preferences. We can handle gluten-free needs in most situations. However, Catalan cuisine is heavily centered on seafood (especially in paella and Delta de l'Ebre), cured meats (jamón, chorizo), and traditional dishes with specific ingredients. Our cooking class menu will not change, but alternatives can usually be provided. When eating at family homes and small village restaurants, menu flexibility may be limited. A positive attitude about alternatives is essential. |
| Weather & Seasonal Considerations | October in Catalonia is typically mild and pleasant (60-75°F / 15-24°C), but weather can be unpredictable. Rain could affect outdoor activities like grape harvesting, e-bike riding, or hiking. We'll adjust the schedule if needed, but some signature experiences depend on favorable conditions. You must be comfortable with this uncertainty and trust our decisions to ensure the best possible experience. |
| Travel Distances & Mountain Roads | Some bus rides are unavoidable to experience Catalonia's diversity. The drive to Priorat (2.5 hours) features scenic but curvy mountain roads. You must be comfortable with extended periods in vehicles and understand that reaching authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences requires travel time. If you're prone to motion sickness on winding roads, bring appropriate medication. |
This adventure creates lifelong memories and friendships, but only for guests who embrace the Catalan family experience completely. If this sounds like your kind of cultural immersion, we'd love to welcome you into our família catalana!
